Vacation the Way You Want To

Whether you’re looking for the gorgeous sights our area has to offer, a foodie adventure, or an action packed getaway, Top of the Ridge Farm can help you plan your perfect trip to New Hampshire.

Mt. Major

Nearby Beauties

By now you probably know it: Top of the Ridge Farm B&B is literally surrounded by many gorgeous places. Yet, if we had to pick one, we would probably say that Lake Winnipesaukee is our crown jewel. And there is no better way of taking it all in than from the deck of one of Mount Washington Cruise ships. If you choose to depart from Wolfeboro (“The oldest Summer Resort in America”!), make sure that you stick around for a stroll across the endearing downtown and perhaps catch its lively Farmers’ Market (Thursdays).

If you keep driving North for 15 miles or so you will reach the village of Moultonborough, known for the 20th Century mansion which carries the evocative name of Castle in the Clouds. After a visit to the house, and a leisurely walk on one of the several trails around it, we certainly recommend a bite on the terrace with sweeping mountain and lake views.

historic walking tours

Cultural Mavens

Start off your day by “hopping” onto the 10.30 am walking tour organized by “Discover Portsmouth”: a knowledgeable guide from the historical association will introduce you to the town’s hidden gems.

If you have time before lunch, you might want to pay a visit to the Strawbery Banke Museum, an authentic 10-acre outdoor history museum comprising heritage gardens and historic buildings.

Today, you should grab a bite at the RÍ RÁ Irish Pub, right in the main square, and you know why? Because its building used to be the New Hampshire Bank, back in 1803, making it the oldest bank building in The United States (listed in the National Register of Historic Places)!

In the afternoon, a trip to Fort Foster (Kittery, Maine) will allow you to blend the visit to a well preserved World War II historic fort into a very pleasant walk, featuring beaches, plenty of grassy picnic areas and picture-perfect views of Portsmouth Harbour.

Time to head back to your 18th century B&B for a well deserved rest, unless you still have the energy to check out the calendar of the Rochester Opera House, for a live concert or a theatre show.

Flavors Journey

The journey starts here, at the B&B, with your delicious gourmet breakfast.

Head north, towards the endearing village of Wolfeboro. Take a stroll, treat yourself to a souvenir or two, take in the beauty of Lake Winni and – when you start feeling peckish – head towards the Lone Wolf Brewing Company. Sit at one of the authentic beer hall tables from Germany, pick one of the 10 rotating draft lines and order yourself a sandwich (never to drink on an empty stomach, they say!).

Slowly find your way back. Before you return to Top of the Ridge Farm for a postprandial nap, why not indulge in a hand-made ice cream at our neighboring Johnson’s?

After some me-time, perhaps sipping on a cup of coffee while admiring the stunning views from the comfort of your room, put on something cute because Portsmouth is waiting for you. Artsy stores, coffee shops and historical buildings are all around you. Making your way from the charming downtown to Prescott Park, you might want to grab a drink on the deck of the Old Ferry Landing, while you evaluate the endless dinner options this vibrant town has to offer.

Action Packed

Build up some energy with your tasty breakfast and start your day with an invigorating hike up Mount Major. It is so close and yet the view will take your breath away.

Head back to the B&B, jump on a bicycle and speed downhill towards New Durham or follow the road along the ridge for more spectacular views. Bring your own bicycle or rent one while you’re here!

If you have some energy left, ride till the crystal clear Merrymeeting lake and – why not? – book a water sport activity with Feet First Watersports.

In the evening, after a meal at any of our local eateries, return to base and admire the glorious sunset from the B&B back patio and prepare for an early night… After such a busy day, you will sleep really well, we promise!
